So my PC died 😛
It served me for a good 2 and a half years without a single ‘format’, which is a new personal record for me. Sure, its use was limited to word processing, basic web browsing and off course running the radio, but it still lasted a long time considering it ran 24 hrs a day.
The cause of death was a double hardware/software problem which made me simply abandon the poor thing and go out to buy a brand new PC. I found out that PCs are cheap these days, which is a good thing, but the catch is that they all come with Windows Vista pre-installed!
I heard a lot about Vista – specially the jokes 🙂 – but never really used it for real. Therefor, I had a big grin on my face during the whole setup process, and it even lasted for a few hours after that.
One of the first things I did after installing Norton and Office was attaching the hard disk of my old PC to restore my old data. The process is simple, clean the old folders, copy them to the new HD, format the old HD then copy the folders back to the newly formatted HD. But, I found folders which I didn’t have permission to access… others I didn’t have permission to delete.. and for every other file I had to confirm that I really want to delete it THREE TIMES! which was funny for the first 10 files since it reminded me of the Apple ad, but it became very irritating after that 😕
The system is obsessed about conformations! You have to confirm that you want to delete a file (three times as mentioned above), you have to confirm that you want to run an application (you really do!), you have to confirm that you want to disable this function or enable that… and the list go on. It looks like it just do not want to be held responsible for any possible fault, so the next time a program freezes the system will tell you “well, you’re the one who ran that file.. don’t say I didn’t warn you!”
To be fair, it looks pretty and just run smoothly 🙂 It still did not crash on me… yet, and that’s good. I hate the design of the new Explorer, but it works better than on XP… so far. It connected to my XBox 360 -almost- effortlessly. But the best thing about it is that it’s really… funny 😀 I mean really… they are called “Gadgets” 😀 (you have to be a Mac geek to get it 😛 )
All-in-all, the first day was fun 🙂 It was not problem free, but that’s expected. The most important thing is that… I survived, so far…
